1967 Jaguar 'S' Type
2003 saw the
celebration of the 40th birthday of the S-Type Jaguar.
Launched in 1963 it was fitted with a choice of either a 3.4 or 3.8 engine
[ours being 3.8]. The interior was fitted with genuine leather upholstery
and beautiful walnut dashboard and door trims. The top edges of the doors
are chromed both inside and out.
The base price was
£1,758.00!
15,000 S-Type Jaguars
were produced between 1963 - 1968. Our Jaguar is 1967 and has had 5
previous extremely careful and loving owners.
Although some might say that the S-Type was slightly less desirable than
the MkII it is, in many ways, far more technologically advanced and a more
comfortable car. It was fitted with Jaguar's new superb independent rear
suspension instead of the rigid rear axle fitted on the MkII. Power
steering was fitted as standard as was overdrive making driving, even on
todays roads and motorways, very effortless. The comfort of the ride is
even equivocal to todays more prestige cars.
Maximum speed is 120mph with 0 - 60 mph coming in at 10 seconds!! At 85 mph
the car engine purrs at 3000rpm.Whilst the S-Type was a heavier car [30.7
cwt / 1560 kgs] the motoring critics of the day acknowledged that the car
was quicker on the road than the MkII due to the efficient rear suspension.
One can immediately
distinguish an S-Type from the MkII as it has no lights mounted on the front
wings plus the boot is longer. It also has twin fuel tanks [which believe
me, it needs!].
She may be 40 years
old but even by today's high specifications, ride and looks, the Jaguar
S-Type can still make passers-by stand and stare and admire her sheer beauty
and elegance [especially when she is wearing her Sunday Best ribbons and
bows!]
